About White Culture & Blind Justice:
It is assumed that white people have no culture of their own, but we do. Its not a rich broth of soup or a hearty stew, its more like tepid water with a bit of salt. (That’d be our salty salty tears).
In actuality, we are so culturally bereft & naked that we often adopt the cultural markings of the ethnicities around us, like hermit crabs adorning ourselves with the cast off shells of other cultures. Who hasn’t been to a Celtic wedding with a Native American theme, where they jump over a broom and then step on a shot glass?! The traditional wedding march IS most certainly our cultural heritage, (but Havah Nagilah sounds so much cooler!)
If we are embarrassed its because we don’t like the pabulum of our soft culture under-belly revealed. We are so cold and vulnerable without our gossamer thin veneer of a culture. It’s like the skin that grows on vanilla pudding when left too long in the refrigerator.
Truth be told: white culture is Hollywood, NASCAR, greeting card holidays and being culturally confused. Its holding your head up with pride while faining gratitude for our subtle differences all the while just trying to fit in.
Even so, its good to laugh at ourselves. And we’d best get used to it:)
